Beyond The External

What does struggle mean to you? This series of paintings will be depicting the lives of Afro-Caribbean women in the developing world. There's a Chinese idiom called 'saving face'. In fact, this idea of 'saving face' doesn't only exist in China, it exists everywhere. For example, some women from the Caribbean who are financially strained will wear a beautiful outward appearance and hide the fact that they are in need of help. They will be seen wearing the finest garment and jewelry; yet a visit to their homes will depict otherwise.

We save face so that others don't learn about our struggle. So what will life be like now that a nation is strained? People are divided from each other? Money and jobs are scarce?

Due to Covid-19, our world has drastically changed. How will that change affect us in the near future? Is it time to stand up and fight for a better world more than ever before or will we remain complacent?  What will the new struggles and challenges look like compared to before?

This series will look beyond the surface, beyond face value, and reach into the pockets and hearts of these women who have struggled to get somewhere and make a comfortable living. Stories will be documented and songs will be sung. Cultures will be shared and curtains of truth will be opened.
